Heritage Exterior Painting in Sydney

A heritage façade is read from the street, and every flaw shows. We prepare and repaint period exteriors with the care their detail demands.

What a heritage exterior is made of

Heritage exteriors combine many surfaces that behave differently: lime or cement render, face brick and sandstone, timber fascias and bargeboards, verandah posts, cast-iron lace, windows and doors. Each needs its own preparation and its own coating, and they have to look right together.

Preparation comes first

Most paint failures start under the paint. We remove loose and failing coatings, make good where the surface allows, before a single coat goes on. Where masonry or structural timber needs a specialist trade, we tell you rather than painting over it.

Colour and character

Exterior schemes on period buildings are usually a set of tones: wall, trim, joinery, ironwork. We help you work out what was there, what suits the building and what your council expects, then match it.

Access and scheduling

Façades, gables and chimneys need safe access. We plan the access for each building, from ladders and scaffold to boom lifts where the façade calls for it, and tailor the schedule to your deadlines and the weather.

Unpainted stone and brick

Original face brick and sandstone are generally best left unpainted. If your building was painted over in the past, we will talk through the options before anything is stripped or coated.

Heritage exterior painting: common questions

Can you repaint without changing the colour scheme?

Yes. Repainting to match the existing or the original colours is common. We can match the current scheme or help you trace the original one.

How do I know when a heritage exterior needs repainting?

Flaking, chalking, bare timber, rust bleeding through iron and cracked render are the usual signs. An inspection at the quote stage shows the condition of the existing coating and what the next cycle should look like.

Do I need council approval to repaint a heritage property?

It depends on the property and the council. Heritage-listed items and buildings in heritage conservation areas often have rules about exterior colours and finishes, and repainting in the existing colours is treated differently from changing the scheme. Check with your council first. We can help you prepare the colour information they may ask for.
