Surface Preparation and Paint Restoration in Sydney

A new coat is only as good as the surface under it. We restore failing paint properly, not just cover it.

Why paint fails

Peeling, blistering, chalking and cracking have causes: old coatings that lost their grip, moisture behind the surface, movement in timber or render, or the wrong paint over the right one. Painting over a failure hides it for a season.

What preparation involves

  • Removing loose and flaking paint.
  • Washing and cleaning the surface.
  • Filling cracks and holes.
  • Sanding and feathering edges.
  • Priming bare timber, metal and masonry.

Restoring paint on ornate surfaces

Mouldings, iron lace, carved timber and decorative render need careful preparation and the right coating. The aim is to bring back the crispness the detail had when it was new.

When a repair is not a paint job

Rot, rust-through, rising damp and cracked masonry need fixing at the source. Where a specialist trade is needed, we will say so, and paint after the repair.

Surface preparation and paint restoration: common questions

Can old paint be restored without stripping everything?

Sometimes. If the existing coating is sound it can be cleaned, repaired and recoated. If it has failed across a surface, stripping back is the honest answer. An inspection shows which applies.

Does repainting cure damp?

No. Paint does not fix moisture. If damp is the cause of the failure, the source has to be dealt with first.
